The Department of Chemistry, Delhi University (DU), is holding a conference on January 8 and 9, to provide the necessary foundation for establishing an on-going initiative on 'Green Chemistry' in the country's educational system and assist in building a green chemistry educational capacity in India by 'training the trainers.' Researchers from both - the US and India will be meeting to discuss real-world applications of green chemistry and on ways to build industry, university and government partnerships.
"We will be identifying areas where scientific collaborations between scientists from our countries can take place, on green chemistry, for sustainability ranging from fundamental research to realworld applications," said R K Sharma, professor, Chemistry Department, DU.
The scientists will also discuss on ways to build programmes for development, dissemination and utilisation of various renewable energy based technologies like solar cells, wind power, bio-fuels and biomass combustion. The conference aims to prepare and disseminate educational material on green chemistry for schools, colleges and universities through specially designed courses, addon courses and so on, with a focus on laboratory experiments. "We will also organise training programmes not just to expose chemists to concepts, principles and methodologies of green chemistry but also to empower them to bring this new knowledge back to their institutions. The role of green chemistry in education will be taking the centre stage of the discussion," stated Sharma. He went on to add: "Scientists and researchers from both nations will try to find a solution to global warming, renewable energy, depletion of resources, water quality, sustainable agriculture and integrated pest management, food supply, toxics in the environment and metal processing." Those who have worked extensively in the field of green chemistry will also be awarded. "The academic committee will select participants from different institutions, industries and organisations. An important part of the success of this educational initiative is the strategic selection of individuals to participate in the sessions for the success of the initiative," informed Sharma.
